Welcome
Teams first dipped their toes into Mississippi River mud to play volleyball at the Hannibal Y Men’s Club fundraiser in 1979. Now, 30 years later, the event continues to grow and prosper.
Thousands of people flock to Hannibal, Mo., to revel in the hometown of Mark Twain over the Fourth of July holiday. Some come to paint fences, jump frogs or just watch the river roll by. Others simply come for the mud.
“We wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Travis Crane, a member of Team Dirt, said. He has been coming to Hannibal from Kansas City for 13 years to participate in the event. “This is the only thing I think of — 365 days a year.”
Crane is not alone.
People congregate at the foot of Hill Street to watch and participate in the action. It is a tradition that brings Hannibal natives home from all across the country — an impromptu reunion.
Things have changed over the years: The registration tent has gone from a funeral tent to a pavilion; the number of participants has nearly doubled since its inception; and the out of bounds is no longer determined by piles of sandbags.
However, the important things have remained in place — cold beer, warm smiles and good fun.
